Hurricane Henri
As if having a missionary by itself isn't tricky enough...you throw in a Hurricane that is set to make landfall just 30 miles away from where your missionary is serving and wow! As I watched the storm on the internet web and with the weather stations I was thrilled to see it downgraded from a Hurricane to a Tropical Storm, but I have never been a part of this or something even similar so I didn't know how I could help or what, if anything, I could do. And that is HARD!
Sister Garcia was given permission today to message us and let us know what was going on. She told me that she went to the grocery store and got extra food and water and they would be staying in for the day and until they were given the green light that they could safely go out again. Church would be cancelled but that also means a baptism for Helmer too. I am so sad for her on this! Another reason she messaged us was that they were not 100% certain that they would keep power with this storm coming on and so a regular P-Day on Monday might not be an option. I was grateful but I almost wished that she would have made a call rather than just a message. Selfish Mom moment sneaking in but I admit it...I wanted to hear her voice! Something about hearing my kids gives me peace. Sister Garcia also let me know that she is moving on WEDNESDAY!!! She is going to go to Salem, MA and she is going to be a trainer. So much happening via the Facebook!!!Throughout the day I kept messages going through the Facebook to keep Sister Garcia updated and to ask questions to make sure all was still good. She was fantastic at reactions and keeping me updated and making my anxiety of the unknown settle some. I watched the internet web and kept an eye on what the local news was saying back East. I finally climbed into bed and felt that it would all be great and if anything it would just be awesome rain that Sister Garcia would encounter.
I am hopeful that all works well, that these sweet girls don't lose power, that they are safe and warm, and that Sister Garcia can feel our love and prayers. I am hopeful that we will get an opportunity to talk tomorrow like a regular Monday and we can figure out what is in store as the 'aftermath' of this.
Hurricanes, Tropical Storms, Whatever...stay away!
Mom
